I realize many people will freak to know this but some visitors (like me) in the middle of the hot day like to seek refuge in an air conditioned restaurant like Maccas or Pizza Hut. I mention it so that you have some barometer of the economic nature of Yogya city. Besides the palace (kraton) and water palace (taman sari) and kota gede (the silversmith suburb), there are wonderful places outside Yogya like Borobudur (the largest buddhist stupa/temple in SE Asia) and Prambanan (If not mistaken it is the best hindu ruin in SE Asia). All these things make Yogya the best kept secret in the spice islands, not excluding Bali. The sound of the Adzan calling prayers 5 times a day is a new sound that you wont normally be used to in Bali but there are few more fun things to do than float around the town in a becak (pedal rickshaw) all day. Bali is outrageously expensive for everything compared to Java.
