It only takes half an hour on the boat from Lombok - you can get a boat (public, really cheap, or chartered, bit more) across from Bangsal Harbour (most popular, lots of persistant hawkers hanging around trying to rip you off) or Sengiggi. It takes more like an hour from Sengiggi and the boat has to be charted - we got one from a guy on the beach for 150,000 rupiah (paid between three of us).
The Gilis are absolutely beautiful - and lovely and peaceful, so good for children. Even Trawangan, which hs where the 'party scene' is, is hardly anything on the Kuta scale. It is all very low key, and the northern end of the central beach gets quieter as you walk up, until the places are really isolated on the other side of the island. There is good snorkelling, lots of laid back bars with cushions to lie around on, lots of cimodos (horse and carts) to take you round if your feet get tired - there are no cars - and beautiful white sand with clear turquoise water. Gili Air and Meno are even more peaceful.
Definitely fit the Gilis in if you have time, at least for a couple of nights.
