with most package holidays, you can take advantage of purchasing the cheap ticket with say 3 or 4 nights accomodation at a lead in property, and after that do your own thing for the rest of your stay.
I have only ever once been told by an agent that I had to have the entire holiday pre booked and paid for the accomodation component.
This was for a special deal and the maximum lenght of stay was 3 weeks.
In that instance I just gave the travel agent the contact details for the hotel I normally stayed in and they did the booking. The price was pretty much the same as if i had done it myself.
So the answer is yes, this does happen sometimes. I would however check direct with garuda as sometimes agents tell you what they would prefer you to do.. Check it out and then go back to the agent if the story garuda tell you differs... cheers :-)
