Get an International license (easy peasy). You can hire an air-con Jimny for from A$10 per day for weekly hire. Daily is dearer. For the cost of a driver for a day you could have a car for 6 days - petrol on top of course but Jimnies are economical. Balinese car renters are doing it tough, too.
